PERSONAL TRAINING
WITH INTENTION
“WHEN I RUN, WHEN I LIFT, WHEN I PRACTICE, WHEN I CONSUME
Run for a purpose or for no reason at all. Run to heal, to forget, to be reminded.
Lift to get stronger, to maintain, to grow. Lift to sweat, to release, to explode.
Practice to breath, to sit still, to stretch. Practice to meditate, to soothe, to mend, to extend.
Consume media, music, images purposefully. Consume foods that satisfy, nourish, and please.
Do it all with intention.”
“WITH INTENTION” is something I wrote when I started EXHALO FORTIS. I felt it was necessary to re-iterate the intention behind EXHALO FORTIS. This blog post is intended to explain my philosophy and goals when training individuals. If you are contemplating hiring me to train you, I recommend reading this post to learn if we are a good match and if our goals align. Also, please check out the about section!
MONEY
Often times we believe that spending a lot of money on something means that we are on our way to solving a problem we have. We made the financial investment, therefore, we are entitled to a solution. This mind set may be appropriate for some situations but in the wellness industry, it is not so clear cut. Throwing money at an expensive personal trainer or a fancy gym membership adds up to nothing if the individual is not prepared to make a lifelong change. Ultimately, the responsibility lies upon you, not anyone or anything else.
However, do not let finances stop you from contacting EXHALO FORTIS. I want to work with anyone who is interested in pursuing wellness. This means that we can set something up to stay within your budget.
COMMUNITY
I especially want to encourage those in the LGBTQ community to reach out. I want to change toxic masculinity male gym culture into something that is more inclusive and this cannot happen if we don’t show up. Women can lift weights, men can do pilates, there should not be any made-up social barriers that prevent this from happening. ALL forms of exercise are for ALL bodies. Let’s get in there! Let’s change the status-quo and make ourselves healthy at the same time.
ADHERENCE
It is totally okay and normal to be drawn to physical activity for its superficial benefits such as looking better in a swim suit or taking better bathroom selfies. I, however, would like you to transition from finding superficial benefits in physical activity to focusing on benefits that extend beyond what you can see in the mirror. This will lead to a higher likelihood to being consistent and adhering to a workout program in the future, with or without EXHALO FORTIS.
Helping you find intrinsic value in physical activity is my goal. Once you find yourself intrinsically motivated to workout you are more likely to adhere to some sort of exercise routine for a lifetime. Finding movements that you genuinely enjoy, activities that you look forward to, or even that post-workout feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction are all examples of intrinsic motivators. This is my goal. This is what I want you to find. With consistency, my guidance, and executing different types of exercises properly, I believe we can find something you enjoy. This does not mean you are excused from difficult workouts, it means that the program I develop for you will give you the tools you need to get on the right path to meet your goals and set a lifelong routine.
MEASURING SUCCESS
A good workout program will provide you with measurable results. As much as possible, I want to focus on other metrics besides numbers on a scale. The following are examples of what I consider a successful client:
Increasing the number of days you are intentionally devoting time for physical activity (Example: going to the gym 3x’s a week versus once a week or no days a week)
Participating in a new type of physical activity outside of our training program (examples: running on your own, participating in an instructor guided exercise class such as yoga or indoor cycling)
Signing up and following through with a race such as a 5K, a Tough Mudder, a triathlon, a swim competition, or even a full marathon. (I can provide you with suggestions!).
The ability and knowledge to properly execute exercises on your own with little equipment.
Gain confidence in your knowledge and within yourself to walk into any generic gym and be able to perform a challenging workout on your own.
Learn proper form for foundational movements such as lunging, squatting, hingeing, and activating your core
Your self-worth and progress cannot be reduced to a number on a scale, or the circumference of your biceps or of your waist. We are all so much more than that. Lets not focus too much on those metrics and focus more on what I’ve listed above. For many people, simply being consistent with their workouts and practicing more mindfulness with their eating habits will generate results such as muscle gain or weight loss. The ultimate goal here is to commit to a lifelong habit of physical activity.
ACCOUNTABILITY
There are many roadblocks that could prevent you from adhering to your exercise routine. Hiring a personal trainer and having a financial stake in the endeavor will increase the likelihood that you will stick with your program.
The gym, working out, yoga, group fitness classes can be very intimidating for a new person. Often times I hear, things like “I don’t have expensive Lululemon coordinating outfits to do yoga” or “I don’t have time” or “gym culture is not for me.” Let me be your resource to commit to a workout, commit to learning something new, commit to getting better acquainted with your body, commit to feeling well. I am here to help you!
This is my passion. Physical activity, yoga, running, etc. has helped me both physically and mentally over the years and I believe it can help you in more ways than you realize.
